4-H Signs Partnership with The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society

4-H and The Minerals, Metals & Materials Society (TMS) have announced a new partnership to support youth science, engineering and technology (SET) education in America.

TMS will promote the 4-H SET programs to their more than 11,000 professional and student members, who are metallurgical and materials engineers, scientists, researchers, educators and administrators, and encourage them to help teach SET topics to K-12 youth in the 4-H programs. These professionals and students will bring their real world knowledge and experience to 4-H members as teachers and mentors.

"Science, engineering and technology education is a critical component of youth development and education," said Dr. Robert Shull, TMS president and leader for the 4-H Adventure in Science program in Maryland for nearly 20 years. "This new partnership will allow youth to hear from science professionals and educators, enabling them to gain a realistic picture of these professions."

TMS promotes the global science and engineering professions concerned with minerals, metals and materials and considers science and engineering outreach activities an important component of this mission.

Two new documents for 4-H Professional Development are available: "What is 4-H Professional Development?" information sheet and the Learning Priorities Fall 2007 Update.

National Animal Identification System (NAIS) Powerpoint

A Powerpoint focused on the National Animal Identification System for use with 4-H programs is available on the Extension/NAIS Web site.

This presentation for youth producers and exhibitors explains what NAIS is, why it is important, and how they can get involved. It details:

  • The speed in which animal disease can spread
  • The importance of premises registration
  • How animal ID helps prevent the spread of disease
  • How they, as youth producers and exhibitors, can set up their own animal travel log
